Tustin Public Schools Foundation Announces 2009 “Dinosaur Dash Run For Education” Logo Winner For November 1 Event



Beckman High student Robert Lieu’s design won the Tustin Public Schools Foundation’s logo contest for the 2009 Dinosaur Dash Run for Education.

The foundation received 65 entries from Tustin students. Lieu won the $100 prize, and his teacher, Gigi Manning, will receive $100 for classroom art supplies.

The Dinosaur Dash will be Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Market Place in Tustin at Jamboree Road and Bryan Avenue. Proceeds benefit schools in the Tustin Unified School District.

26th Annual Newport Beach “Spirit Run” Attracts Nearly 2,000 Runners To Benefit Elementary Schools In Newport-Mesa Unified School District

newportbeachspiritrun2009“…nearly 2,000 runners – some as young as 4 years old – braved intermittent downpours and gusty winds Sunday to compete in the Newport Beach Spirit Run, which began at 7 a.m. on Newport Center Drive across from the Fashion Island mall.

The Spirit Run, now in its 26th year, consists of 11 timed events though the streets of Newport Beach near Fashion Island. All but three of the races are for kids in middle school or younger.

The Spirit Run is organized by parents at five Newport Beach elementary schools – Andersen, Eastbluff, Harbor View, Lincoln and Newport Coast – which are the primary feeder campuses for Corona del Mar High School, serving seventh- through 12th-graders.

Most of the race’s proceeds will go to the five elementary schools’ PTAs, although participants from other Newport-Mesa Unified School District elementary campuses may request that a portion of their $20 entry fees go to their schools…”

Historic Balboa Paillion, Newport Beach.




The CdM Foundation needs your help!  Last year we raised almost $900,000 for CdM Middle and High School.  These proceeds were used to rebuild the Quad, complete the technology upgrades and fund counseling and academic programs at both the Middle and High School.  A core part of our fundraiser is the Neptune’s Ball, which raised almost $200,000 last year.   This event is the major fundraiser for the The CdM Foundation and is the premier social event for the school.

This year the event will be Chaired by Carol Carlile.  Carol can be reached at 949-675-2877.  Patsy Marshall and Carol Dalton will return again this year to head up the Underwriting effort.  We look forward to your participation in this spectacular event.

Orange County Funders Roundtable: Orange County Non-Profit Foundations Facing Declining Revenues With Increased Demand For Services In 2009

 The Orange County Funders Roundtable, a coalition of local foundations, today released the results of a countywide study on how local nonprofits have been affected by the growing economic crisis. With 58% of respondents facing declining revenues in 2009, and over 66% seeing a greater demand for services, the results show that nonprofits have been hit hard by the economic crisis.

“It’s a perfect storm,” said Michael Ruane, Executive Director of the Children and Families Commission of Orange County. “Reduced donations, increased demand for services and the impact of the state budget crisis on the safety-net providers are putting incredible pressure on our local nonprofits.”

The survey highlights these conditions, showing that 46% of nonprofits surveyed have lost granted funds and contracts that were anticipated, and 43% have major donors that were unable to provide continued funding. An additional 33% have already tapped their reserves, and another 13% are using lines of credit to sustain operations.

A growing demand for social services — such as food, shelter and medical care — by newly impacted Orange County residents is also contributing to the strain on local nonprofit organizations. Residents finding themselves newly in need are seeking first-time assistance from a wide range of services and programs. Former two-income families are turning to food banks for groceries to feed their children. And during times of economic hardship, the instance of child abuse and neglect dramatically increases.

“It is critical that the public be aware of the dramatic new needs and challenges that the economic crisis brings to Orange County. The local nonprofit sector plays a vital role in supporting quality of life in our communities,” said Shelley Hoss, President of the Orange County Community Foundation. “But the local nonprofit safety net needs reinforcement. There is an opportunity here for neighbors to help neighbors, for each of us to help, by giving our financial resources and our time.”

The report also highlights the strategies nonprofits executives are using to face these challenges and continue supporting their communities. One survey respondent expressed the fighting spirit of the sector when they said that the economic crisis “…has caused us to reinvent the way in which we meet the needs of our clients, become extremely efficient and to work harder.”

The Spirit Run is a marvelous student, family, and community road-racing event, the net proceeds of which benefit Newport-Mesa schools. 26 years ago, parents at the Elementary schools that feed into CDM High School (currently Anderson, Eastbluff, Harbor View, Lincoln, and Newport Coast) started the Spirit Run as a fundraiser. It is now open to every school within our Newport Mesa District!

The Spirit Run has grown to host 4,000 runners, 5,000 spectators, and 40 booths at its expo. It attracts runners, young and old, from beyond Newport Beach, beyond Orange County, and even beyond Southern California, including Olympians!

It has raised well over $1 million dollars for education.

The Spirit Run can help promote fitness at your school and be a terrific fundraiser. For every entry that identifies a school in our district, the Spirit Run will give $5 to that school. Also, the Spirit Run provides online registrants the chance to donate to their Newport-Mesa school. Finally, several of the Spirit Run schools conduct pledge drives where family and friends pledge money if their student completes a Spirit Run race.
