New Science Center, Quad And Renovated Stadium To Be Completed:

Tustin School Board members have pledged to do whatever it takes to put major Tustin High construction and renovation projects on the fast track.

NDT Architecture unveiled preliminary renderings of a new 42,000-square foot science center, a revamped quad and a spruced up stadium Monday.

“I like what I see, and nobody wants to get complacent on this,” said School Board President James Laird. “Let’s get it done.”

The multimillion-dollar project is funded by Measure G, the $80 million bond measure approved by 70 percent of voters in 2002. The funds helped renovate and modernize 20 aging campuses within the district; the Tustin High projects will cap off Measure G spending.

In November 2008, voters approved Measure L, a $95 million bond meant to continue the work started with Measure G.

The Science Center will flank the school’s athletic track, and will feature Spanish-style architecture to reflect the present school buildings. The quad will feature a new raised and covered platform that can function as a stage, as well as wide stairs that can double as seating for any performances. The stadium is to get a new entry, new bleacher seats and an improved team locker room.

Many covered walkways will also be removed, and the campus will resemble South Pasadena High School, for more of a community college atmosphere, according to the architecture firm’s plans and renderings.

School Board members were pleasantly surprised to find a silver lining in the bad economy: construction costs are down, and the science center will cost $2 million less than originally anticipated.

With costs down, “we’re very excited to do as much as we can, as quickly as we can,” said board member Francine Scinto.

Plans for the Tustin High projects will be submitted for state approval by the end of March. Demolition will begin during the summer, and actual construction will begin by August or September, district officials said.
